Successful Mediation – Work of the Bargaining Unit

ATTENTION MEMBERS:

Your grievance committee is pleased to announce that the Union has been successful at mediation regarding a grievance for work of the bargaining unit performed by a person as a student that did not meet the definition of a student.  Your Collective Agreement sets out that persons whose jobs are not in the bargaining unit shall not work on any jobs, which are included in the bargaining unit except in emergencies affecting life and property or in cases mutually agreed upon in writing by the Union Executive and the Corporation.  This is a fundamental component of the Collective Agreement (Article 2), and defines who can do what jobs, and under what circumstances.  Please take the time to review your Collective Agreement, and as always, contact a member of the executive or your steward should you have any questions or concerns.

2021 Community Christmas Toy Project and food drive a huge success at Welland Optimist Club

The Community Christmas Toy Project and food drive was a huge success this year at the Welland Optimist Club.  The community showed their generosity by donating new, unwrapped toys and non-perishable food items during the drive-thru drop-off events hosted by the Club on Patterson Avenue in Welland on December 5 and 11.  Over 215 pounds of food, and a large quantity of toys were collected, all going towards making the Christmas season a little bit brighter for those in need in our community.  This year the food is being donated to the Welland Open Arms Mission.  Thank you to the members of the Welland Optimist Club, and our CUPE Local 1115 members who came out and volunteered during the events.

For the second consecutive year, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 1115 is teaming up with the Welland Optimist Club in support of the 2021 Christmas Community Toys Drive.  Community Christmas Toys is a non-profit organization that distributes toys to children in need  in Welland and surrounding areas.  The initiative endeavors to supply toys, stocking stuffers, mittens and clothing to help make Christmas a joyous occasion for children in the community.  In support of this effort, CUPE Local 1115 has donated $100 to the Welland Optimist Club.  In addition, members of the Local will be volunteering their time to support the upcoming drive-through/drop off events where people will be able to donate toys/gifts, food, and money without ever leaving their vehicles.

“Our Local supports this community, and we all want to help make Christmas a little bit brighter for kids who might not otherwise have gifts under the tree on Christmas.  Our members work hard every day for the people of Welland to make sure they have the City services they need, and this is just one small way we can give back to help make this time of year a little happier for the kids,”  said Mark Slade, President of CUPE Local 1115.

CUPE Local 1115 represents 102 inside workers at city hall, public works, and Welland Public Library.
